Zero wasteThere is lot we can do to reduce the amount of waste we generate. We know the rules - reduce, re-use, recycle - we've just got to get better at doing it, and to keep doing it. This group is being set up to find ways to encourage our community to take this problem seriously and make zero waste something we can all aim for. In order to launch this group, we collected ideas and tips from people on our 'Interested People' list and made a poster for your office or kitchen wall - Zero waste poster. If you'd like a pdf version of this poster, please contact us and we'll send you one by email.
So - let’s get our act together to make landfill a thing of the past.
Zero Waste IS possible – as soon as we
stop accepting material into our lives that we can’t re-use or recycle, it
happens automatically and easily.
We just need to think before we accept
stuff.
All our lives we have been used
to throwing things away and letting someone else deal with our rubbish, but there
is no ‘away’.
If it isn’t re-used or
recycled it’s dumped in landfill, causing grief to someone somewhere.
We need to face up to the fact that we
are all personally responsible for our waste.
It is OUR rubbish and if we don’t
like waste sites, then let’s get to the root of the problem and work towards
reducing our waste so much that we don’t need them any more.
Whilst we get used to the idea, see our Zero Waste poster (link above) for some tips.
Initially this group will concentrate on encouraging individuals to reduce waste, although where possible we would be actively encouraging the reduction of waste in every aspect of our lives – in our local businesses, schools, hospitals etc.
Current projects/ideas
TTB Q&A zero
waste helpline - to have a regular column in View From Bridport for questions/answers/tips from locals on reducing waste:
Food waste - whether WDDC will be rolling out door-to-door collections in Bridport: DR has discussed issue with Ian Doyle, WDDC waste services manager, who is in total agreement that it would be good to collect food waste, but explained that at the moment there is nowhere to take it. If the infrastructure could be put in place it could be done. ZWG will not pursue this for the time being.
Zero Waste Poster produced and available on website
Festive season waste reduction – poster and leaflet handout asking for more suggestions from public
'Zero waste challenge' to be launched School recycling and domestic vs. trade waste : schools have been allocated funds for recycling – though it sometimes gets spent on other things. However in Bridport much recycling IS being done, but we need to keep encouraging it.
Landfill watch – how to encourage one's neighbours to put less out for landfill
No answers yet - answers on a postcard please!
Future meetings: regular meetings have stopped for the present. Watch the What's On page to see when they will re-start.
