TTB & Rights Respecting

Transition Town supporting the Rights Respecting project

TTB provided a display at the Bridport Arts Centre on 23 January. It was geared towards young transitioners, within the UNICEF Rights Respecting town event recently held there. We were one of several local groups and schools who put on an exhibition in the foyer.

TTB chose to look at Article Six of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. That states that ‘all children have the right to life. Governments should ensure that children survive and develop healthily’.

Our message compared such things as clean water, plentiful food, stable climate clean air, education, free will, and choice for children who live in Bridport or Uzbekistan.

Our aim was to show young people in Bridport that they had opportunities to play healthily and safely in such places as the Trick Factory. They were encouraged to support their local projects and avoid exploitation in their shopping habits.

In contrast we illustrated a child labourer in the cotton fields of Uzbekistan, where they are denied a healthy childhood. These children are forced to work in toxic environments, while picking th e cotton used in cheap fashion clothes.
